Play everyday. My husband is self-taught and he played his guitar almost everyday of the week for an hour or two. On his days off he would sometimes play for half the day, especially if he was trying to learn how to play a song. He could play everything from easy country/western to Kansas, Extreme, Eagles, etc. Unfortunately, my hubby can't play his guitar anymore because of a stroke. But, we are hopeful he will be able to play again in the future.
References :
I learned by myself. Im a very fast learner so i picked up fast, but i would start with the scales, know your notes, and learn some basic riffs. one you mastered the basics, you can go on to learning songs, now you can work hard, and listen to the note by ear, or you can look for tab on google. The first song i learned was Stairway to Heaven, by Led Zeppelin. its easier then it sounds. and once you learn some songs, you can experiment on yourself, throw in some scales and riffs you already know of and create something new. Playing guitar is having fun, so play your heart out and have a good time. good luck dude :)
